Hunter Giltrap won our senior award with a very polished performance of Time Ashore, which he enhanced with a beautiful accompaniment on his violin. We were all delighted that he agreed to repeat this performance during the main concert on Sunday evening.
Runner up in the senior award was Caoimhe Lane with a gorgeous presentation of the traditional song Black is the Colour. Caoimhe accompanied herself on guitar, which added the right touch to the song.
Here is her feedback on the awards:
"Performing for the Walker Trust Award was an enjoyable experience - mostly because I got to listen to everyone else’s stellar performances! The standard was really high across both singers and instrumentalists. I was surprised, and quite inspired by the way the Walker Trust took the competition and judging criteria so seriously. The criteria emphasised not only a high level of performance, but also a high level of professionalism. One thing I love about the folk music tradition is its relaxed, informal nature, and that style of passing it on is important and has its place. However, this competition was a good reminder that, if you really want to take it to the next level, and potentially even reach a much wider audience, commitment, dedication and professionalism are all important to work on. It was also great to see so many young people engaging in so many aspects of the festival. I love the feeling of connection to the past and future that I get from participating in folk traditions with so many other people of all ages from all around the world. I’m very grateful for the work foundations like the Walker Trust are doing to encourage our participation!"
An encouragement award was presented to Iris Broadley for her very entertaining and expressive presentation of the traditional folk songs, Rattling Bog, and For the Dancing and The Dreaming.
We had two entrants for the Junior Award .
Our winner was Jonathon Berry who played a set of tunes; The Gael, The Soup-Dragon, and Dr Flora McCauley of Caradale, on the Bagpipes.
Jonathon's performance and presentation wowed us all.
Our runner up was Jasper Davidson, who played us a lively set of whistle tunes.
